Amanda Ansell is exhibiting at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2023 with ‘Light the Shadow’. This year’s theme is ‘Only Connect’, set by the exhibition coordinator David Remfry RA. Only Connect’ is inspired by the famous quote from E.M. Forster’s novel, Howards End. The theme invites artists to explore the connections between people, places, ideas and cultures, as well as the connections between different forms of artistic expression.

He says, “People have become more and more antagonistic. I’m troubled by how disparate everybody has become. We have unprecedented ability to communicate, and we’re further away from one another than ever. Empathy is something we’ve lost, to a large degree.” David Remfry RA

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition has taken place annually since 1769 – the year after the RA was founded with Joshua Reynolds as its President. The exhibition shows every imaginable medium – from prints, paintings, film and photography to sculpture, architectural works and more – by leading artists, Royal Academicians and household names as well as new and emerging talent. Most of the artworks are available to buy, and sales from the Summer Exhibition directly support the exhibiting artists and the RA’s charitable work, including training the next generation of artists in the Royal Academy Schools.
