Slow Painting

SLOW PAINTING is a dual-sited exhibition hosted by The Plough Arts Centre and Studio KIND, Devon, featuring work by members of Contemporary British Painting plus guests. The exhibition is part of the ‘North Devon Summer of Painting’ led by Barnstaple Museum, hosts of the Turner in Barnstaple exhibition. The event is also supported by ArtMakers.

“The fleeting nature of digital mass media appears to have unlocked a desire for more physically stable and enduring pictures, like paintings. Slow Painting charts how, in a world where the constant quest for speed can leave us exhausted, the appeal of this ‘slower medium’ has only grown…” Helen Westgeest

As its inspiration, the exhibition considers the 2019 book ‘Slow Painting’ by Helen Westgeest. The text reflects on the role of painting in a world fuelled by digital, technological advancement, and information overload. Members of the renowned Contemporary British Painting group were asked to respond to this thinking, and The Plough Arts Centre and Studio KIND invited artists to contribute, exploring why painting is as important as ever.

The exhibition runs across both galleries from Saturday 13th July to 17th August 2024. It will commemorate the life of the late Judith Tucker and her incredible contribution to Contemporary British Painting. There will also be a Private View on Friday 12th July 6 – 8 pm, at Studio KIND.

In addition, Plough Arts Centre will host a special event on Saturday 13th July, where artists will give in-person introductions to their work.

1 pm – Opening talk and poetry reading by Harriet Tarlo, commemorating the life of Judith Tucker and her contribution to Contemporary British painting.

1.30 pm – SLOW PAINTING: Surface Tension. An introduction by the artists to works on display.

2.15 pm – Break. Refreshments will be available in the Foyer.
